Introduction to Laban Movement Analysis
Developed by Rudolf Laban, Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) is a framework of principles for the understanding of movement, structure, and purpose. LMA examines the process of moving and enhances our ability to observe, describe what we see, and understand its meaning. One aim of LMA is to bring the body experience to words. In this flexible system there are four primary categories used to experience, analyze, and describe the movement event, they are Body, Effort, Shape and Space (BESS). These analytical skills, which bridge perception and assessment, can be applied to such diverse fields as the performing arts, athletics, health, social sciences, personal training, and non verbal communication. In this intensive course you will explore the interrelationship of BESS. This Introductory course is a pre-requisite for admission to the Laban/Bartenieff Somatic Studies Canada (LSSC) and the Laban/Bartenieff Institute for Movement Studies (LIMS) professional certification training programs.
